Frequently Asked Questions

What is a capital improvement?
SFCIC defines capital improvement expenses as equipment or renovation expenses that create future benefits to MU students. All requested items must:
  1. Be tangible
  2. Be stored on University property when not in use
  3. Have an estimated useful life of five years or more
  4. Not be curriculum-based items (i.e. equipment that is singularly used for a single course)
  5. Be capable of usage by students present and future (i.e. items that are individually fitted for one person)
  6. Cost a minimum of $1,500
  7. Cost a maximum of $50,000
Software, video cameras, cameras and computers usually do not meet these requirements. Small electronics such as camcorders, projectors, cameras and laptops can be checked out at the information desk in the MU Student Center and/or from ORG (Organization Resource Group) in the Center for Student Involvement.
How much funding is awarded from Student Fee Capital Improvement funds annually?
A maximum of $275,000 is awarded annually.
How much do students pay for the capital improvements portion of the fee?
In the fall semester of 2016, full-time undergraduates paid $4.05 per semester.
I'm a member of a Student Organization. Where can I get funding?
For information about submitting your student organizations funding requests, go to the ORG website.
ORG also has various electronic equipment, such as cameras, video cameras, and walkie talkies, available for check out.
Who can apply for funding?
Any current student, faculty or staff member may apply for funding. However, they must be sponsored by a department who will assume responsibility of the asset.
What were some previously funded projects?
Past allocations have included bookshelves, computers, bicycle parking, security cameras for Ellis Library, and furniture for various departments. Click here for the full listing.
