Frequently Asked Questions

What is a capital improvement?

SFCIC defines capital improvement expenses as equipment or renovation expenses that create future benefits to MU students. This does not include structural building renovation, landscaping, or other improvements that would fall under the auspices of the Campus Master Plan. MU campus master planning is based on Design Principles that help guide future development. The Design Principles are organized into three major sections: Project Orientation, Project and Landscape Character, and Architectural Character and address:

  • Use, modification, demolition and/or construction of buildings;
  • Purpose, size, function and location of new facilities;
  • Campus landscape components;
  • Campus vehicular and pedestrian circulation, and parking networks;
  • Changes proposed for remedying deficiencies and serving new development; and
  • University, neighborhood and community land use, ownership, restrictions and circulation patterns.

Also, state and federal compliance does not fall under SFCIC funding.

All requested items must:

  1. Be tangible
  2. Be stored on University property when not in use
  3. Have an estimated useful life of five years or more
  4. Not be curriculum-based items (i.e. equipment that is singularly used for a single course)
  5. Be capable of usage by students present and future (i.e. items that are not individually fitted for one person)
  6. Cost a minimum of $1,500
  7. Cost a maximum of $50,000
  8. Directly affect a significant number of students, benefits to the campus and/or community may also be evaluated by the committee on a case by case basis.

Software, video cameras, cameras and computers usually do not meet these requirements. Small electronics such as camcorders, projectors, cameras and laptops can be checked out at the information desk in the MU Student Center and/or from ORG (Organization Resource Group) in the Center for Student Involvement.

How much funding is awarded from Student Fee Capital Improvement funds annually?

In the fall semester of 2024, full-time undergraduates paid $5.25 per semester.
